A book about Cryptography for everyone
If you are looking to expand your mind, think about learning Cryptography. It is an excellent discipline to help you think in new ways. If you decide you want to learn Cryptography, this is the book for you. The book is written in modules, making it easy to digest. The book is equally suitable for a formal classroom or self-study environment. Using the book for self study is enhanced by the modular format, superb clarity of the teaching, the well-explained answers to the problems, and the appropriately injected humor. People that need to learn Cryptography will undoubtedly have this book on their shelf, whether they are an expert or beginner. I would like to speak to the people that don't need to learn Cryptography - this book is for you too, as you will enjoy learning the thought processes of Cryptography that will enhance your creativity in any field. This book is a gift.

Experience shows.
A rewarding introduction to this unique and interesting discipline. Using working examples, related mathematics, and subject history, Dr. Hershey illustrates important aspects of effective crypto system design. Part of the how-to is to understand how-not-to and the text uncovers some subtle flaws in crypto design and associated consequences. Connections to other areas in communications engineering and applied number theory make the book valuable for a broad audience.

The presentation is insightful, mature, innovative, and enjoyable. Certainly recommended.

Cryptography Demystified: Solid Introduction to Cryptography
As an electrical engineer new to the subjects of cryptography and number theory, I found this book provided a solid introduction to the fundamentals of cryptography. John Hershey conveys the important subtleties and pitfalls essential to evaluating cryptographic systems. He lays out the basic paradigm and takes you step by step through the algorithms and mathematics in a straight forward easy to follow manner. By the end you will have acquired the tools necessary to understand more advanced cryptographic schemes. Overall, I would highly recommend this book to others interested in gaining knowledge about the inner workings behind today's cryptographic systems.

Go Away, Come Closer : When What You Need the Most is What You Fear the Most
Published in Hardcover by Word Publishing (1990)
Author: Terry Hershey
Average review score:

Hit the nail on the head
This is a very good book for those who fear close relationships. The author emphasizes that to be human is to want and need to feel connected to others. Yet, often our ambivalence toward ourselves, those in our lives, and life itself makes it difficult to reach out to others to love and to be loved.

Through reading this book, I came to understand that relationships involve enormous risk and feelings of vulnerability. The results of taking risks can be both painful and pleasurable. However, both are a necessary part of life. Without pain, we would not enjoy pleasure. The author points out that we sometimes live life as though we're fending it off or simply getting through it. He suggests instead that we think of life as an invitation, including an invitation to be loved. There are not necessarily rational reasons others may love us. We simply are loved.

The author is a Christian but the book does not come across as overly religious. I have taken books back to the store because they emphasize religion too much. This book only has some sprinklings here and there. He deals far more with the feelings and emotions his readers struggle through.

One of the best gifts you can give yourself.
Terry Hershey's Go Away, Come Closer could be one of the most unsettling books you'll ever read, yet it's also one of the best gifts you can give yourself and your identity. --Bookstore Journal

The Critter Control Handbook: Pro Secrets For Stopping Sneaky Squirrels & Other Crafty Critters In Their Tracks by Dan "The Critter Man" Hershey is the testimony of an expert with 20 years of experience as a licensed Nuisance Wildlife Control Officer. If you have a problem with nuisance creatures, The Critter Control Handbook is a "must" to learn about practical, effective (and sometimes surprising) solutions!

Entropy, Infinity, & God

Author: Daniel Hershey

Science, poetry and Religion... What color should I choose?
Daniel talks with subtileness about a concept that can make us travel against science and religion. I think that all Thermodynamics book in the world should have a preface,(or the entire book), written by this guy. He mixes poetry, Math, Chemistry and religion. You may ask yourself: What kind of poetry can I find on Enthropy? Well, now I know that if you can't, you know nothing about Entropy. Anyway, an excellent book to read ant think and you better believe me... You're going to think a lot.

Giving the Ministry Away

Authors: Terry Hershey, Karen Butler, and Rich Hurst
Average review score:

A must-have book for leaders!
This book is very informative. It gives step-by-step directions, and lots of suggestions for leaders of small groups. It shows how to grow your group and how to get others to help. A key step is to give the ministry (or vision and responsibility) away to your leadership team who will help you to fulfill the ministry. It changed my way of leadership and helped my singles ministry to grow tremendously, both with a small group of less than 15, and later with a larger group of 50.

Harry G. Traver Legends of Terror (Roller Coaster Designers Series : Vol 1)
Published in Paperback by Amusement Park Books (June, 1982)
Authors: Richard W. Munch, Richard Hershey, and Lee Bush
Average review score:

The legends of yesteryear
This is an amazing book. I wasn't so much interested in the life of Harry Traver, but the legendary coasters he built. Too bad there aren't any of them around today. I have heard the stories of the great rides they were and my grandparents actually got to ride the legendary Crystal Beach Cyclone. A fabulous peek at the great coasters of days gone by.

An Amazing Book
The photos and history in this book go beyond any other book in my collection. I had to pay dearly to get this but it was worth it. For a coaster enthusiast who loves the design, construction, and riding of coasters, this book has it all.

"Harry G. Traver: Legends of Terror"---a legendary book!--
Richard Munch has done a wonderful job writing this book about Harry Traver, a man most people have never heard of. However, true coaster/amusement park enthusiasts know how important his name is to the amusement park industry. The book contains a detailed personal and business history of Traver, with information gleaned from family and many other sources. It's hard to figure how the author did all of this, but the proof is within the covers of this outstanding book. Dozens of b/w photos of Traver's legendary coaster creations, complete with track layout plans and thorough descriptions, bring to life his contributions to the advancement of the wooden roller coaster. The book also contains photos of some of Traver's business papers and promotional materials. Munch also weaves into the text the relationship Traver had with the 1920's coaster team of Prior and Church, who are responsible for several historical coasters, including the still-operating San Diego "Giant Dipper". This book is like a trip through time. The only other book like it is Robert Cartmell's "The Incredible Scream Machine" which in itself is the most comprehensive book ever written on the subject of the history of roller coasters. If you're not too interested in coasters, then you'll find the book to be an interesting curiosity, but if you're an enthusiast, you'll love it. (Submitted January 23, 2002)
